ISP Innovations and "User Interfaces"
Most Internet Services are still based on "Text Files".
Amazing as it seems when the Internet is such a big and important entity,
not only Internet Services, but even Routers, Gateways, and even the
Computer Operating Systems (UNIX) are based on simple text files.
And these text files have four very real problems:
- MISTAKES!
It is very easy for a human
to make a mistake or typo, which
frequently can bring down the service for all of the customers.
The service can literally shut down, with no explanation.
-
And it is not uncommon for it to take hours debugging
to find out what went wrong, if say a human typed an invisible character
into the file. And if these text files are accidentally deleted, and there is no backup,
sometimes the service can *never* be restored as it was.
- If the mistake was made in a text file which configured a whole computer, the whole
computer can shut down. And if the mistake was made in a Router's Text Configuration File, whole
networks can "disappear". We have seen it happen.
-
ISP Innovations has an alternative, which we will describe on the next page.
- TIME CONSUMING!
Typing into these
text
files is usually very time consuming, a task which should take seconds
can frequently takes hours. And that is if no mistakes are made, which if made, can make it take many many times longer, and sometimes with no results at all. And the people doing the work are paid by the hour.
- VERY COMPLEX!
Properly configuring
these text files, requires a skilled programmer, whose
knowledge of these systems often has to equal the skills of the person(s)
who actually originally programmed the system; Not only
are hours spent configuring these files, these hours are either the
costly hours of a computer programmer, or the hours of someone who
does not have the complete understanding of the full capabilities of the
system's functions.
- NO GUARANTEES!
These text files are
passive, so that to make sure the functionality
that was just configured actually works, requires a human to "test it
out". Most of the time this does not happen, and if there are mistakes
complaints. This is because when a small typo creeps in, a service can simply shut down, not only with no warning of what the mistake is,m but worse, no indication that it stopped.
Usually, in these cases, the ISP finds out from the customers, when the phones start ringing with customer complaints, which are a bigger problem than the service being down, i.e. the customers being aware of it.
- This is unacceptable!
